We got married during the Boston marathon on Heartbreak Hill. Our Job...make it 22 miles into the marathon and up Heartbreak Hill. When we arrived the sun glared out and we had a civil ceremony performed by the grooms MOM, Kathy Byrne.
Well, it was incredible. Aaron decided to run a marathon three weeks prior to the NYC marathon in Albany. I went up and cheered for him, and he finished in an amazing 2:49! His personal best for NY! He then was determined to run with me by my side in NYC on November 5, 2006. Well, while he was determined to run with me, I was determined for him not to put any pressure on me, because if I had pressure I would enjoy the run! Aaron decided that rather than risk saying something that might upset me, he would carry speakers with my Ipod, and let me get motivated by the music…(no Bon Jovi of course) and so the race began. Aaron and I side by side for 26.2 miles We were greeted by family along the way the weather could not have been better and I ran my personal best. At the finish line, Aaron proposed to me. (Yes, he carried the ring for 26 miles in his pocket in a Tylenol package. )
We then went back to the NYAC and celebrated, with friends, family and many many toasts of champagne to the happy couple!
The wedding
Engaged in NY, Married in Boston
Who wants to run a marathon on their wedding day? For runners Pattiann McAdams and Aaron Russell of New York City, there is no better way to get married. The couple who got engaged at the finish line of the 2006 New York Marathon and got married on the Boston Marathon course in April atop Heartbreak Hill.
"I can think of nothing more special than saying we got engaged at the New York City Marathon and married at Boston," said Russell who is running his 10th straight Boston Marathon. The fast-running couple is planning to marry in a civil ceremony immediately after conquering Heartbreak Hill in Newton. "It's a perfect location. The three miles in Newton are not easy, and it would be the ultimate love commitment and a nice contrast to be married after scaling Heartbreak Hill," Russell said.
With anticipation of a noreaster, we made sure we had a tent 10 piece band, trolley bus for our guests, food drink and a floral archway.
Once they finished the remaining five miles and crossed the finish line on Boylston Street, the real party bagan. We had a reception afterwards at the Lenox Hotel, Solas with family and friends from New York and the New England area, and also Swizerland, Germany, San Fran!
We had a 10 piece band and celebrated with toasts as we watched ourselves on the CBS News.
What a beautiful day!
We then headed back to NY for a religious ceremony, and this time the weather was with us. After the church ceremony, we took all of our guests on a 90 minute cruise in a water taxi around Manhattan. Then docked in the Seaport, for a reception at the Bridewaters.
We had the best of both worlds, and I had no tears that day, only smiles for I had met my soul mate, and my life has begun!
