No one knew what was going on.
Let me start by saying I got engaged on December 25,1989.
The invitations went out--Phyllis' 35th Birthday Party. I just wanted my family and a few people I care about to be at my Birthday babaque. July 24th at my moms house at 2:00. I was so happy almost everyone was comming.
July 21,2004.
My Mother had just ordered 5 pizzas. Bob said he was tired and wanted to go home. I said well my Mother ordered the pizza and it will be here soon. Boy was I mad when he said "NO I AM NOT STAYING FOR PIZZA I WANT TO GO." I figured we should go, there must be something wrong with him because he never talks to me like that. We said goodbye to everyone and got in the car. As we were going down the road I looked at him and said, What is your problem it would not have killed you to stay for half an hour more and eat pizza. He looked at me with that look he gets when he is up to something (it's kind of like a half smile) I laughed and said "You got me a puppy for my birthday" He laughed and said, no. I started singing You got me a puppy--you got me a puppy. We get home and I walked in the house, making kissing noises "wheres my puppy and out of the living room came running my puppy AJ that I have had for 9 years. Hi baby boy I said and gave him his hello kisses and said wheres you sister. (I did not have a puppy)I looked at Bob and said ok I don't have a puppy so what is going on and it better be good or I am not making dinner when there are 5 perfectly good pizzas at my moms that you could have eaten. He said you have to call your Uncle Mike he is waiting for you to call.
Hi Unk, What's up? He gave me a phone number, she is waiting for you to call and he hung up. OK, Bob is this the women with my puppy. He said Phil you are not getting a puppy just call the #. I dialed the phone and a man answered, Hello, this is Phyllis, Mikes neice he told me to call you. OOHH Hi Phyllis this is Bill and we just sat down to dinner can I will have my wife call you as soon as we are finished. Of course I said yes, Now I have to wait and to see what is going on till this women gets done with dinner I am going to go nuts here. I turned around and I was in the house all alone Bob was gone. I grabbed the cordless phone and ran out the door. Bob was talking to his parents next door. They both looked at me and all I got out of them was, Hi Phil how are you doing today. I said good except uummm Honey can you please tell me what is going on? My answer was "You will see soon enough".
Finally what seemed like 15 hours later (which was really about 20 minutes) the phone rang. Hello. Hello Phyllis this is Whynema your Uncle Mikes neighbor, Oh no I thought something is wrong why is the neighbor calling. She said, so I hear your getting married Saturday and I just wanted to let you know that there is a 24 hour hold on a marriage licence in NY so you have to go down to the town hall ASAP, you don't have too much time and we need to set up at least one meeting, I like to talk to couples before they get married and ask a few questions and make sure I feel that you are ready to get married. I could not say a word, I was not sure what was going on I had planned and shopped for a barbaque not a wedding. We set up a time and I hung up. I yelled out the door, BOB PLEASE COME HERE. He came over and said Before you say anything there is one thing you have to promise, you can't tell anyone not even you mother, I was trying to plan this so even you didn't know until it was time but there is no way to get a maggage licence with out you knowing so I had to tell you and I needed Uncle Mike to see if he could get a minister (his neighbor just happend to be a minister) or someone to marry us so I had to tell him and my mom and dad had planned on going away this weekend so I had to tell them but no one else can know. It is going to be a surprise. Now I have a very big mouth and I felt the need to tell someone and I promised I woulden't so what was I going to do. I said uuummm Bob you need to call your brothers you know they are not comming to my barbaque and you need to get more than Mom and Dad there.
So the phone calls started and i felt like I kinda told someone. I went out to buy more food and I called and got Bob out off from work earley on Thursday and off on Friday. Thursday we went to the town hall, went and got wedding bands and ordered some flowers for me, my Mother and Bobs Mother, Done in 45 minutes, and I am going to be sick. No sleep Thursday night and its now Friday less than 48 hours left, we started getting some cooking done and the phone calls started again, What do you want me to bring tomorrow, hhumm I thought if I were planning a big wedding how and who would I get involved, MaryAnn, Nicole, Laura (my Sisters) Nancy (my Sister in law) My Mom of course and my Aunt Maria who was already involved shes married to Uncle Mike, and Aunt Jean ok the main people so I called Nancy and asked her to make he quiches they are the best. Mary Ann, Nicole and Laura will stand next to me as my wittnesses, and I asked Aunt Jean if she would please get to my moms a little early to help me set up and we were having the babbaque at my moms. It was perfect and easy for everyone. It's Saturday morning and I was thinking this is good no problems about who is going to sit with who, I am not going into debt and no one has to wear uncomfortable cloths this is good.
My little sister was working for half a day and she would be home by 2:00 My older sister was working till 12:00 and Laura was on her way and it is only 12:20 Aunt Jean, Aunt Maria are here already we are on a roll!!! The phone rang and I started to cry, Nicole was stuck at work ad her boss told her she had to work till they were caught up, the minister was comming at 3:00 she was not going to be here and I can not get married without all my sisters here. I had to break my promise,less than 3 hours before my wedding. I called Nicole and said Nick you have to be here by 3:00 you have to, she said I can't my boss won't let me leave until all of the work is done there were a few girls out and we are behind. I cryed louder and said but I am getting married at 3:00 and you have to be here, Dead silence on the phone and I hear click, she hung up. Laura is here, Mary Ann is here and no Nicole. 1:35 Nicole pulls in the driveway runs into her room slams the door and did not come out until 2:40. Nicole what happend she said nothing and she started helping get things ready. My Unlce Mike came in the house and called for my Mom and Dad. Phyllis, Lou can you please come in here. Thats my cue.
My Uncle looked at my Moom and said I am sorry we have to do this now but there has been something bothering me for a while and I have to say something. Bob, You are marrring my neice you have been together for a very long time and I thinks its time you do something about it. Bob said well we can't do it today we don't have a marriage licence and Bobs Dad (Al) said Oh I have one right here and he pulled it out of his pocket. Bob said well we don't have any rings and Bob's brother (Billy) said Oh I have that and he pulled out the rings. Bob said Ok we don't have a minister and Whynema said "I am right here" Bob said well then I guess we are getting married today. My Mom and Dad who are still looking at all of us like we are nuts say "married today, now, and we said in 15 minutes. My mom said No I can't wear this I look horrid, I said mom you have dresses from every other wedding in you closet that you will never wear again you can wear that dress you have on (a red comfortable sun dress that had barbaque sauce on it from her helping me cook). Nicole came back up the stairs with a basket that had wedding hearts wrapped in white net and pretty ribbon. She went to her boss said I have to go my sister is getting married and I will explain later, ran to the store then ran home and made wedding favors for us.
My Aunt pulled out a white flower hair piece and my sisters grabbed me and pulled me into the bathroom where I did manage to change into a simple dress and they all grabbed a brush and hair pins and hairspray and pulled and poked and did my hair. In the mean time my mom had run outside and yelled to everyone THEY ARE GETTING MARRIED.....NOW. I was listening to everyone laugh saying, well Bob it only took you 20 years of being together and engaged for 15 do you think you are ready.
Then I turned around and noticed Nancy and Al are not here yet. Mary Ann grabbed the phone and called, Nancy was waiting for Al to get home and then they were going to be on there way. Mary Ann said you have to get here by 3:00 or Bob will not give Phyllis her birthday present. I can't tell you how much time passed but it seemed like no time at all I hear Nancy come in the house saying they are getting married aren't they. Mary Ann offered to get me to the airport if I wanted to back out and then everyone realised I did not tell anyone and they were a little mad at me. No shower, no party, they felt jipped out so I said well just look at all the time and money I saved you all.
The minister stared and everone was silent and the song my grandfather sang on every holiday was playing on the sterio (which was not planned) So almost everyone I loved was there in one way or another weather it was in spirit or in person. No one could ask for a better wedding.
